fabbrica chimica arenella - restoration

Year

2010

Location

Palermo, Italy

Description

The Chimica Arenella Factory in
Palermo was built at the beginning of the 20th century and has been preserved until today as a protected monument. This project proposes to restore the former factory and convert it into an exhibition space.

The restoration consisted of a long process of researching the history of the building and collecting samples of the structures existing materials.
After identifying the building
materials and researching the
original methods of construction we sought to analyze common areas of degradation and propose possible treatments for each of them.

The proposal for the final exhibition space respects the original structure and materials of the building. We treated the degradations through by intervening with material  substitutes and construction methods similar to those that were originally used.
